Golf Park Golf Club professional Eric Ooko fired a composed 3-under par 68 to take the clubhouse lead after the opening round of the Absa Invitational, the fourth leg of the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing, currently underway at Nyali Golf & Country Club.
Ooko enjoyed a bright start on the par-71 coastal course, carding birdies on the 1st, 2nd, 5th and 8th holes while dropping his only shot of the outward nine on the 3rd to make the turn at 4-under 33.
He added further birdies on the 11th and 17th before bogeys on the 13th and 16th saw him settle for a round of 68 and a one-shot advantage heading into Wednesday's second round.
After taking the outright lead, Ooko credited his patient approach and solid ball-striking for giving him the edge on a demanding Nyali layout.
"It's always good to start a tournament with a solid round. I stayed patient, gave myself plenty of birdie opportunities and managed the course well. There are still two rounds to play, so the focus is to remain consistent and keep doing the basics well."
Occupying second place on 2-under par 69 is a three-way tie comprising Nigeria's Ideriah Solomon, Sigona Golf Club's Mohit Mediratta and Rwanda's Celestin Nsanzuwera, all within touching distance of the leader.
Making his first appearance near the top of the leaderboard this season, Solomon said he was pleased with how he handled the course conditions and is optimistic heading into the second round.
"I'm pleased with the start. The conditions were good, and I managed to stay disciplined throughout the round. Hopefully I can build on this over the next two days."
Mediratta, who continues to enjoy a consistent run of form on the Tour after his strong showing at the Kabete Challenge, said he was satisfied with his opening-round performance despite leaving a few shots out on the course.
"I struck the ball well and gave myself chances. There are a few putts I would have liked to make, but overall it's a positive opening round and I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead."
For Nsanzuwera, who won the opening leg of this year's Sunshine Development Tour at Thika Sports Club and has remained among the Tour's most consistent performers, the focus now shifts to maintaining his momentum over the remaining two rounds.
"I'm happy to be in contention after day one. The course requires patience, and I'll be looking to maintain my rhythm as the tournament progresses."
One shot further back on 1-under par 70 is an eight-way tie featuring Kenya's Abraham Galgalo, Taimur Malik, David Wakhu, Greg Snow, Michael Karanga and elite amateur Adel Balala, alongside Nigeria's Sunday Olapade and Uganda's Phillip Kasozi, setting up an intriguing battle heading into the second round.
The tournament, sponsored by Absa Bank Kenya, has attracted 80 golfers from nine countries, who are competing for prize money, Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points and valuable Sunshine Development Tour Order of Merit points, all of which contribute towards qualification for the main Sunshine Tour.
Round two tees off on Wednesday morning, with the leading contenders expected to intensify the battle as they seek to secure places for Thursday's final round. At the conclusion of Wednesday's play, only the top 30 players and ties will make the cut to advance to the championship round, where they will battle for the title, the KES 2 million prize money, and valuable Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), and Sunshine Development Tour Order of Merit points.
